So How Do Newspapers Treat Science Stories?

I've been banging on about how the Australian got an Economist to balance a story about the release of an anti-global warming book. But it seems most science gets this treatment. Here's Ben Goldacre talking about reporting on GM foods. The key quote"

During the crucial two days after the GM ‘Frankenstein Foods‘ story broke, in February 1999, on the back of an article in this newspaper, not a single one of the news articles, opinion pieces or editorials on the subject – in any British newspaper - was written by a science journalist...
Yeah, why ask scientists, or science journalists, to cover science stories, it's not like they are important.
